1588 - The defeat of the Spanish Armada. I had a Social Studies teacher in Junior High who insisted that we learn that date. It was on every test, all year. At the time, I couldn't have cared less why it was important, but now I understand that it ranks among the most important dates in history for Americans of European descent. It is difficult to imagine how different our society would be had that battle come out the other way. Thanks for the reminder, Wes.
